Mantel is finally done!

Finished the mantel the other night. We had a couple poplar 4x10's left over from building, so I cut them down to 2.5" thick by about 8" deep & used them for the mantel around the pellet stove.


Close up. We used a water based polyurethane & it really brings out the grain of the poplar.


These will turn into many shades of brown after they age a while. Still a bit green since I just planed them down.

Hello, I am a person looking into building a log home. I have been looking through your blog and I think you have been doing a great job. I hope to be able to do as well. I was wondering if you could provide some kind of loose o even detailed drawing of your floor plans. Your plan looks quite open and that is something we are having issues with designing. Jessica & I needed to figure out what stain to use to protect the logs. We ordered samples from 3 different companies (listed below). Kitchen almost done!

 Kitchen cabinets were delivered a couple weeks ago, we got everything installed. Also got lucky and find a range hood cover that was the perfect size and a really good deal, so picked it up and installed it.  Got the vent insert nstalled this weekend. Finished some lighting above the sink and in the hallway as well as the island plugs and dishwasher.  We installed the shower slider doors in the master as well, and the mirror above the vanity.   Oh and we also got fridge, stove and dishwasher delivered!

Loft joists are finished

Finally got back down to the house today (did I mention night work stinks??) & finished off the other 1/2 of the loft floor joists. Ready for some OSB decking on-top. The bottom will be covered with drywall & the top will likely stay unfinished.
